The African Fact-Checking Alliance (AFCA) is Africa’s largest indigenous fact-checking network. The network consists of newsrooms and civil society organisations who fight misinformation by publishing fact-checks to debunk viral conspiracy theories and other toxic content. AFCA supports organisations that publish in international languages such as Arabic, English and French, but also champions efforts to produce actionable information in major African languages such as Amharic, Kiswahili, Afaan Oromo and Tigrinya. AFCA is a member-driven network, that receives logistical support from Code for Africa, the continent’s largest network of civic technology and data journalism labs, and PesaCheck, the continent’s largest fact-checking initiative, with financial support from various international bodies such as UNESCO and ACEPIS, and curriculum support from First Draft News.
